A set of experiments using state of the art techniques is proposed, in order to perform a detailed analysis of sediment mechanics under different flow conditions by looking at the sediment scale and to understand the mechanisms behind large scale processes such as scour. A deeper and accurate vision of granular mechanics from the statistical point of view is expected at the end of this project. This will be achieved by an independent confirmation of existing results, the application of existing mathematical and numerical models to different cases, rather than the 1D flows found in the literature. The partners involved in this project will benefit in first hand from a solid discharge meter; a combined PIV+PTV (Particle Image Velocimetry + Particle Tracking Velocimetry respectvely) and an accurate numerical model capable of describing local scour based on sediment dynamics.

The objective of this research is to explore the gaps found in literature in order to develop new and improved models for describing pedestrian and vehicle interaction at unsignalized crossings (no traffic lights), based on the analyses of the behavior of those users at specific situations. In this context, the research aims at, using a pedestrian simulator, and to identify the risk factors behaviors and implement pedestrian behavioral attributes in a traffic microssimulation modelor environment. The models will address pedestrian behavior at intersection crossings, based on field and controlled experiments carried out in virtual simulated environments. The models will describe pedestrian-vehicle crash risk (function of geometry, individual characteristics and perceived risk, vehicle traffic, pedestrians traffic, type of road pavement) and will also be compatible in form with algorithms used in microsimulation tools. Additionally, 3D natural movement of pedestrians will be modelled and incorporated in simulated environments to support the development of pedestrians’ crowd and friction models. Finally, a simulation model package will be reached as a tool to be used by technician and researchers. It is important to remark that results of this research may be used to promote educational measures and in this way to promote road safety.

Milestones are control points where decisions are needed with regard to the next stage of SPN. Globally, a milestone occur when a major result has been achieved or when reaching a target successfully is required for the next phase of work. During the development of SPN, seven milestones have been defined as follows: Milestone 1: Workshop on the standard for SPN and its optional data sources. The workshop, involving all the partners, will occur in the end of the applied research phase. The aim is to define and consolidate the requirements needed to develop the SPN model. The workshop will be a platform of collective discussion about the standards for the SPN model. Milestone 2: Project website: Build and put online the SPN website. Prepare documents resulting from the workshops and disseminate the information through the project website and other supports, including e-flyers, posters, etc. Milestone 3: Flyer, Roadmap to SPN, posters, etc. Prepare documents resulting from the workshops and disseminate the information through other supports, including e-flyers, posters, etc. Milestone 4: The SPN implementation plan for each city approved by stakeholders. By involving the stakeholders, the plan for implement the SPN model for Porto and Bologna will be defined. This milestones includes the identification of methods to implement and run the model, the customization of parameters and the collection of data required for the model. Milestone 5: Formation of stakeholder groups in cities. A group of stakeholders will be created regarding the implementation of the SPN. This group should aggregate participants and representatives of both Porto and Bologna. The goal is to assist the city in implementing policies and in promoting actions to encourage walkability. Milestone 6: The SPN implementation in Bologna and Porto. The SPN model will be fully implemented in Porto and Bologna considering the implementation of urban and transportation policies, the estimation of costs and benefits of implementing these policies and in terms of providing the pedestrian navigation system. Milestone 7: Workshop with participation of municipalities and other stakeholders. The final workshop will be a conference to present the project results with the participation of the several stakeholders.

In the building and construction industry, huge quantities of materials (concrete, steel, wood, polymers, aluminium, copper etc.) are used in an unsustainable way. At the end of use, buildings are demolished and remnants treated as waste or –best case– downcycled. As price increases suggest, material scarcity is growing. Stakeholders like raw material producers, process industry, manufacturers of products used in buildings, architects, waste handlers, urban planners and real estate owners face the challenges of the reduction of virgin resource consumption and initiating quality reuse and recovery of materials used in buildings. To facilitate this the establishment of industrial symbiosis and a repositioning of building and product design are needed. Frontrunners among the above-mentioned actors as well as research institutions bundle forces in the BAMB project. Specific objectives of the project (and WPs) are: -Monitoring technical and non-technical barriers and opportunities for the introduction of material recovery from buildings and reversible building design (WP1); Make and implement electronic Materials Passports enabling circular product design, material recovery and chain of possession partnerships, improving quality, value and security of material supplies (WP2); Make and test a decision support model (WP3) for dynamic and circular building management integrating input on materials recovery/re-use (input WP2) and input on reuse and transformation potential of buildings, systems and components (input WP4); Make integrated architectural design and engineering protocols for reversible buildings (WP4); Demonstrate new design, manufacturing, construction and maintenance approaches for buildings through pilots; testing business models for circular material value chains, organising supplier communities (WP5); Create new business models tailor-made to the needs of players in material value chains while creating societal added value; define the operating model supporting the execution of the business models (WP6); Define a set of standards, policy propositions and regulations tackling the legal barriers on different levels that impose the transition of the building and supply industry towards industrial symbiosis (WP7); Maximising the dissemination impact– for industry up-take of business models, public sector involvement to reform policy, increase awareness to change consumption patterns related to buildings (WP8); Given that the other industries like automotive have already demonstrated the advantages of value chain integration, the above mentioned objectives seem realistic and balanced.
