    A aplica{\c c}{\~a}o de compostos clorados na desinfe{\c c}{\~a}o da {\'a}gua pode induzir {\`a} forma{\c c}{\~a}o de subprodutos da desinfe{\c c}{\~a}o (SPD) com efeitos carcinog{\'e}nicos e mutag{\'e}nicos comprovados. Neste trabalho, apresenta-se uma s{\'\i}ntese de um estudo sobre a ocorr{\^e}ncia de trihalometanos (THM) na {\'a}gua de abastecimento, realizado nos catorze munic{\'\i}pios do distrito de Braga (Portugal), visando a avalia{\c c}{\~a}o do risco de cancro (RC) e de efeitos n{\~a}o carcinog{\'e}nicos (HI) com base na metodologia desenvolvida pela USEPA e IRIS. Num cen{\'a}rio gravoso, correspondente {\`a} preval{\^e}ncia da maior concentra{\c c}{\~a}o de THM detetada no per{\'\i}odo monitorizado, o indicador RC daria valores superiores ao limite m{\'a}ximo definido como negligenci{\'a}vel, verificando-se ser a ingest{\~a}o a via de exposi{\c c}{\~a}o mais relevante. Os resultados obtidos para o indicador HI foram quase sempre inferiores {\`a} unidade, indicando um n{\'\i}vel de risco aceit{\'a}vel, de acordo com os pressupostos do m{\'e}todo utilizado. O uso de indicadores do risco para a sa{\'u}de constitui uma ferramenta {\'u}til quer no apoio {\`a} decis{\~a}o das entidades gestoras de sistemas de abastecimento de {\'a}gua, quer na defini{\c c}{\~a}o de estrat{\'e}gias e pol{\'\i}ticas de sa{\'u}de p{\'u}blica que visem a mitiga{\c c}{\~a}o deste risco.

    About CTAC

    The Centre for Territory, Environment and Construction (CTAC) is a research unit of the School of Engineering of University of Minho (UMinho), recognised by the “FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia” (Foundation for Science and Technology), associated to the Department of Civil Engineering (DEC), with whom it shares resources and namely human resources.
