Efficient management of multi-purpose reservoirs under uncertainty scenarios reveals to be a challenge task that can be supported by advanced mathematical modeling techniques. These can include hydrological, hydrodynamic, water quality and optimization models that must be integrated in proper operational environments in order to be used as decision support systems.

In this work a set of modeling tools for reservoirs are presented, including a hydrological component for the reservoirs inflows prediction, a reservoir mass balance model, a water quality model and a real time control component for dam hydraulic structures operation based on short term weather forecasts data.

Different case studies are presented involving both quantitative and qualitative reservoir management problems. These different reservoir systems and the related needs for operational decision support by optimization are analyzed. Seasonal prediction of primary production in reservoirs of the Alqueva irrigation Project (Portugal) and proper operation of multi-purpose reservoirs for mitigation of flood risks in downstream river reaches at Minas Gerais (Brazil) will be presented.
