IMPACT OF URBAN WATERCOURSES ON THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND REGENERATION OF PUBLIC SPACES

TitleIMPACT OF URBAN WATERCOURSES ON THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND REGENERATION OF PUBLIC SPACES

    Abstract

The great majority of cities and urban areas are crossed by watercourses which have an enormous importance in the life quality of populations. Their impacts can be both positive - when integrated management of the whole system is implemented - as negative – resulting from floods and degradation of water quality. Therefore, this case study focuses on a watercourse – located in a region in the north of Portugal – that has been negatively and progressively affecting the entire community. The study aims to find a requalification solution that mitigate the negative effects of this watercourse – namely floods and water pollution – and, at the same time, enhance the opportunities inherent to an integrated and efficient management. The solution presented makes this possible. Safeguard the water quality and reduce the flow peaks as well as develop an efficient flow management while, simultaneously, promoting the regeneration of the surrounding area and the sustainable development of the region.
