    Abstract

The process of accelerated urbanization in the twentieth century led to the rapid growth of cities. Due to
the awareness of the degradation of the environment caused by the development policies adopted by the
modern society, the concept of sustainable development emerged. The implementation of sustainable development concepts aims to correct the current course of development, integrating issues related to the protection of the environment and natural resources, as well as issues related to the equality of people, both now and between generations, and issues related to social concerns. As one of the most important economic sector in Europe, the construction industry is also the sector that consumes more raw materials, non-renewable energy resources and generates excessive waste. Many studies have been developed to reverse this trend, seek to minimize these impacts and make construction a more sustainable sector. In order to allow the comparison of solutions and practices recommended in these studies, sustainability assessment tools were developed. At first, these tools were developed with the purpose of evaluating and certifying buildings according to their performance in various categories and indicators. New tools have recently emerged for the evaluation of urban areas such as neighborhoods, communities and even cities. This paper aims to present and analyze the urban sustainability assessment tool SBTool Urban, developed in Portugal with the aim of improving the organization of the space for the consolidation of the urban fabric, promoting the quality of the environment and the quality of life of urban inhabitants.
