Abstract | The sustainable design, construction and use of buildings are based on the best trade-off between environmental pressure (relating to environmental impacts), social characteristics (relating to users’ comfort and other social benefits) and economic aspects (relating to life cycle costs). Sustainable design strives for greater compatibility between the artificial and the natural environments without compromising the functional requirements of the buildings and the associated costs. This aim is the basis for the most relevant design tools and guidance documents that have been developed to support both healthcare organizations and design teams in designing, building and operating a sustainable healthcare building. Nevertheless, several questions arise: Is this type of tools taking into account the specifications of the healthcare buildings? Do they really incorporate the specific impacts of these buildings in the environmental, societal and economic dimensions of Sustainable Development? What are the main concerns considered by recognized case studies? The answers for these questions will be presented and discussed in the course of this paper. |
