The Road Pavements Laboratory is equipped to:
- Assess the physical and rheological properties of new or recovered bituminous binders and aggregates, highlighting the following equipment: RTFOT; binder incinerator; rotational viscometer; dynamic shear rheometer (DSR); rotary evaporator; foamed bitumen production equipment; high speed bitumen mixer; Micro-Deval; Binder/aggregates affinity; Aggregates Polished Stone Value (PSV).
- Produce bituminous mixtures and specimens for performance testing, such as stiffness modulus, fatigue and permanent deformation, water sensitivity. The most relevant equipment includes the four-point bending apparatus, the Wheel Tracking Test (WTT) device and a uniaxial testing machine.
- Assess the structural condition of road pavements, as well as their surface characteristics, which influence the comfort, noise and traffic safety, using the following equipment: Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD); Road Surface Profiler; equipment for pass-by and continuous measurement of noise, as well as sound absorption; British pendulum.
